Unofficial houston.efh.talk FAQ
Prentiss Riddle (riddle@rice.edu) 1998.12.16
http://is.rice.edu/~riddle/play/efh.html
1. What is the purpose of the newsgroup houston.efh.talk?
Discussion of Electronic Frontiers Houston (EFH), its issues and
activities.
2. Is advertising (spam) welcome here?
No, except for announcements of activities related to EFH's issues.
3. What is (was) Electronic Frontiers Houston?
EFH was a non-profit cyberactivist group founded in 1993. Here's a
description from EFH's literature:
Electronic Frontiers Houston (EFH) is a non-profit corporation
devoted to working with and for the Houston computer and
telecommunications community... Included on the EFH's agenda
are: advocating civil liberty issues in "cyberspace," promoting
wider public access to computer networks, exploring artistic
and social implications of new digital media, and educating the
public about the increasingly important on-line world.
4. What happened to EFH?
It was active and exciting for a while but like many good things it
eventually faded away.
In another sense, though, EFH isn't gone at all because it merged
with EFF-Austin to form EF-Texas (see question 6).
5. So why is this newsgroup still here?
I'm not sure. I proposed a while back that it be deleted, but a few
old EFHers wanted to keep it for reasons unclear to me. Personally
I think a newsgroup that has lost its founding organization is an
attractive nuisance (see question 2).
6. How can I contact the remnants of EFH?
You can reach the organizational heir to EFH, as well perhaps as
some of the individual veterans of EFH, through Electronic Frontiers
Texas:
Electronic Frontiers Texas

512-303-6246
eftexas@sanmarcos.com
7. What are some other cyberactivist contacts in Houston?
Greater Houston Free-Net (formerly Houston Civic Network)
http://www.ghofn.org/
HOUINFO: the Houston Information Access Discussion List
http://is.rice.edu/~riddle/houinfo/
(A low-noise forum for discussing online access and civic
networking in Houston.)
I'd like to add others to this list -- any suggestions?
8. What is the status of this FAQ?
It's completely unofficial and contains my opinions only. I just
got tired of legitimate but recurring questions about the nature of
this newsgroup going unanswered, and especially tired of people
dumping ads here. If EF-Texas or some other legitimate heir of the
EFH mantle wants to revive this newsgroup (or delete it altogether),
I'll gladly drop this FAQ.
9. Where should I send comments/corrections/etc.?
Please send them to me at "riddle@rice.edu". Please don't post them
to the newsgroup unless you're sure that a lot of other people would
be interested. Thanks.
